interest check

☠⠀overview.⠀☠

Thank you for your interest in our game!

Pareidolia is a dark fantasy horror panfandom game that emphasizes exploration and characters' influence on the setting. Pareidolia sets its focus on emotion and identity, and aims to capture the dread of the undefinable shapes moving in the dark — the intimacy of hushed late night conversations that can never be repeated in the daylight — and the creeping cultivation of the darkest parts of ourselves.

As tired and busy working adults, we want to run a game paced for our fellow tired, busy working adults. That means this will be a slower paced game with low activity requirements, streamlined event posts (rather than individual logs), and CR-based activity reward incentives (i.e., be rewarded for the number of characters, setting pieces, or NPCs you engage with, rather than for the brute number of comments submitted).

We intend to follow players’ lead: new mechanics, clues, and setting areas uncovered will be proportionately responsive to the interest shown by players and characters.

Checking out a new game is a lot of clicking around, we know. We compiled the basic tl;dr of the mechanics for a quick breeze-through:
  • 18+ players only
  • Setting: is an isolated, abandoned mountain town with limited resources
  • Themes: isolation, religion/cult, emotion, survival
  • Pace: slow! here's the calendar.
  • Plot?: yes - overarching themes and plot threads
  • TDM every other month
  • Applications open all month, every other month, while the TDM is active
  • Invite-only & locked log community
  • No network
  • NPCs: fully intractable and appear intermittently
  • AC: low and to be determined - please help us decide by posting a response to the interest check!
  • Activity rewards: based on range of CR interaction rather than comment count
  • No hiatus mechanic; strikes accepted.
  • Character powers: remain in tact as long as they are not game breaking
  • Player cap of 30; 2 characters per player
  • Allowable characters to app: CRAU, malleable protagonists, Canon OCs, player AUs, any age
☠⠀interest check.⠀☠
1. Pareidolia may accept a limited number of Canon OCs, malleable protagonists, or Player AUs, so long as applicants provide a comprehensive write-up of the backstory/canon state/choices that have affected or changed canon and their mental state. Do you have any thoughts on this?

2. AC, in whatever form it ends up in, will be taken every other month. We want the activity to be low and manageable, but for there to be a system in place to prevent squatting in a small, capped game. We're considering the following options:

a) Ten comments split between two threads.

b) Minimum of one thread submission with no length requirement, and a 2-5 sentence summary of how the character has engaged with the game this cycle, whether or not those things have been threaded.

3. For my personal excitement: is there any character in particular you’re interested in playing in this setting?

4. Any other thoughts or questions?

Preferred AC option: Option a) - ten comments over two months in two threads.
Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: I think that the option described sounds good!
Any other thoughts or questions? Call me the Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock the way I love using fog to set a tone. Strongly considering my awful child here, Alec from Worm, for the sake of him having annoyingly good hair despite the constant humidity and also adding to the horror by being a small horror himself. Definitely not considering Oz Cobb (2024) or Wet Batman (2022).

Preferred AC option: I like the first option!
Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: This all seems fine to me! I always find it nice when any character whose background isn't google-able has basic physical description/personality info available on their journal for other players to read, too, so maybe encouraging something like that would be helpful as well?
Any other thoughts or questions?
Gonna do some thinking about who to bring, but it will probably be our pal Pal, since he continues to be my loudest blorbo by far.

Also I have maybe a dumb request that you can 100% ignore: I can find event posts to be overwhelming and tend to have a harder time reading threads and tagging around in games that center on those, as opposed to more individual open posts (it's just something about DW's UI and the way threads get nested that makes it hard for me to read). I'm wondering if it's possible to structure the game so that there are opportunities to use event posts and create logs, depending on preference? Totally fine if that just doesn't work for what you have in mind, since this is a me problem, but I thought I'd check!

You're very welcome, and thank you for considering! <3 What you suggest would be perfect for me, though I realize other folks might have different preferences, so if you end up doing things differently, that's totally okay. It isn't a factor that will stop me from joining!

Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: seconding becca that having the writeup available for fellow players to read would be nice! otherwise i'm very happy to see these types of characters around.
Any other thoughts or questions? super stoked for this game!! highly considering sofia from the penguin here, and possibly noelle from worm as well.

Preferred AC option: I'm honestly fine with either!
Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: That sounds totally fine. I think malleable protagonists being played in DWRP is always interesting, and having a writeup of the player's thoughts about them should be enough to convey the way they intend to play them! Considering I have played characters like that in the past, I feel like most players probably go into it with a solid idea of what they want to play them as.
Any other thoughts or questions? I'm still thinking of who to bring here! Considering the theme, I'm leaning towards pulling out Alice from American Mcgee's Alice again for good old times' sake..

Any other thoughts or questions? i have no suggestions and no thoughts but the more i think about it the more i'm not actually sure who i want to bring in beyond "some variety of slasher/horror monster"

Preferred AC option: No strong preference, but I think I prefer option A.
Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: Also fine with this, especially with a write-up like other people mentioned.
Any other thoughts or questions? I'm just happy to be here. Almost certainly bringing Kaz Brekker but that's not a surprise. I just love subjecting him to horrors.

Preferred AC option: Both are fine with me! I'd probably prefer Option A's comment requirements but I do like the little write-ups and find them useful...
Canon OCs/Player AUs/Malleable protags: Personally I lean towards 'no' on canon OCs but yes on malleable protags, but maybe this is me being deeply steeped in the usual standards, haha. Player AUs could be interesting, but I feel like it should probably be limited to canon-divergences rather than full AUs?
Any other thoughts or questions? I don't know who I am bringing - either I am partnering up with someone to bring deranged castmates or I'll maybe give you a prickly little Gundam guy??
